As the last Advice Worker vacancy at RC has just been filled by a long-serving volunteer, i thought it would be worth posting up info about opportunities to get involved...
the committment certainly does not have to be onerous, and there are a wide variety of different roles for volunteers, depending on interests and experience - volunteering has been a really valuable route for many refugees to move back into employment in UK - it's also a really effective way to get on the inside of a refugee agency and find out what makes it tick and which skills you need to position yourself for employment. here, from RC website :

Be a volunteer

Volunteers make an invaluable contribution to the work of the Refugee Council. There are currently over 300 volunteers working across England. We have offices in London, Ipswich, Birmingham and Leeds, and there are volunteering opportunities in all of these areas. Volunteers provide a range of different services including befriending and helping asylum seekers get used to where they are living, employment mentoring, information giving, administration and teaching English.

All volunteers are recruited through the local volunteer co-ordinator, who also arranges induction and on-going training. The volunteer co-ordinator will be able to tell you about current opportunities in our teams and how your skills and experience might be used within our services.

Volunteers are asked to make a minimum commitment of 1 day per week for a minimum of three months.

If you wish to find out more about volunteering, go to the links below. You will need Adobe Acrobat software to download these documents, which you can get free by clicking on the icon at the bottom of this page.
