The Medact 2006 Elisabeth James Lecture
‘Notions of health as a western cultural export: a critique’.
Dr. Derek Summerfield.
Friday, October 27th
7 – 9.00pm
120 Belsize Lane, London, NW3 5BA
Dr Summerfield is well know for his work on the inappropriate application of western concepts of biomedicine and psychology, particularly in southern countries and as part of humanitarian assistance programmes following conflict and disasters. He has stressed cultural context, social fabric, rights and justice as the foundations of mental health, and social action and empowerment as key to mental health programmes.
This is a strong and essential message in a globalising world
Entrance fee: £5 for Medact Members; £10 for non-members
Places are strictly limited and should be reserved in advance as demand is expected to be high.
Please send payment by cheque made out to Medact with your name, telephone number and email to
