Project Worker in the One Stop Service Team

Salary £21,588 pro rata

Based Birmingham

The Refugee Council is the largest charity working with asylum seekers and refugees in the UK, and provides services to clients in offices in London, Ipswich, Hull, Sheffield, Leeds and Birmingham.

Based in one of the Refugee Councilís Regional Offices, though spending a great deal of time doing outreach sessions in the region, members of our One Stop Service team will give support to asylum seekers and refugees. For newly arrived asylum seekers, this will involve assistance with their application the National Asylum Support Service of the Home Office. Asylum seekers housed in the region will also be able to access the One Stop Service for advice and support, as will refugees who have received a decision on their claims for asylum and are entering mainstream services.

The team will work with other agencies, community organisations, health services and others to enable refugees and asylum seekers to access a range of relevant services across the regions

You will be an experienced adviser with first class communication and negotiating skills, enabling you to liaise effectively with a diverse range of clients, outside contacts and other teams within the Refugee Council. Your listening and empathising skills will be coupled with the ability to manage your own workload effectively and cope with the demands of working in a pressurised environment.

Team Receptionist Ė One Stop Service

The Refugee Councilís One-Stop Services provide assistance to newly arrived asylum seekers and ongoing advice and support to refugees.

The role of the Team Receptionist will be to greet and welcome asylum seekers coming to the service; to refer them appropriately; to ensure accurate monitoring and record keeping of service users and to undertake administrative duties to ensure the smooth running of the service. The reception area is very busy, and due to the nature of the work, can be stressful at times. Operating a small switchboard and dealing with enquiries from clients, staff and external organisations will be part of your daily routine.

The post holder must have experience of working in a busy office, in a customer focused environment. You must have the ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and different client groups from many different cultural backgrounds. Essentially, you need to be able to remain calm under pressure and be able to deal with difficult/distressed/traumatised clients in an effective, professional and respectful manner. A good command of written and spoken English is required and the ability to plan and organise your workload and manage your time effectively. Your commitment to the work of The Refugee Council is vital along with an understanding of the importance of confidentiality and the principles of Equal Opportunities
