Quote: | *Mr. Chris Mullin (Sunderland, South) (Lab):* Will my right hon. Friend confirm that because *Somalia* has entirely disintegrated it has not been possible for many years, including when the Conservatives were in office, to deport anyone to that country, short of taking them up in an aeroplane over Mogadishu and dropping them out with a parachute? Does he therefore agree that it is entirely fanciful—indeed, hypocritical—for Conservative Members and their friends in the media to pretend otherwise?
*Mr. Clarke: *My hon. Friend is correct. That has been more of a difficulty with that country than with just about any other country in the world. It is possible to imagine voluntary return in certain circumstances, which has been achieved in a small number of cases. More generally, however, it has not been possible to proceed for precisely the reasons that he gives.
(Hansard, *3 May 2006 : Column 984*) |
2006 has been an interesting year in Somalia; after 15 years of warlords and anarchy since the demise of the tribalist Barre regime, this year has seen the first 'ideological' conflict - the CIA backed warlord coalition dubbed 'Alliance for the Restoration of Peace and Counter-Terrorism' (ARPCT) were seen off by the Union of Islamic Courts (UIC) who swiftly consolidated power over the south and are squaring off against the Ethiopian (& by proxy US) backed Transitional Federal Government (TFG) who are threatening violation of the UN arms embargo by inviting foreign trrops to defend their parliament in Baidoa
The UIC have managed to unify Mogadishu and open the airport to international passengers for the first time in 11 years, unfortunately it's still impossible to find any analysis of the Islamic Courts in the western media that doesnt draw inevitable reactionary & islamophobic associations with Taliban & Terrorism...

3 UK Based Somali Community websites:
http://www.somalivoice.org/ Somali Eye media, est 2001, based in Bethnal Green
Quote: | do a fantastic job. The only group I know of in this field. Established in 2001, they have gone from strength to strength. They now produce quarterly magazine and run a weekly radio programmes both in Somali and English. The radio is widely listened to and the magazine is widely read and very popular both with the community and service providers. Many local authorities are already using the magazine to get their message across to the community whether is advertising jobs, events or general awareness raising. For further information please contact Adam Dirir.

Quote: | They also produce newsletters on a regular basis and make use of television and other forms of media to communicate information of benefit not only to the considerable Somali community in the City and County, but also to the wider community. Their potential is beginning to be recognised - Leicestershire Constabulary, for example, have linked up with them to advertise employment opportunities with a view to broader engagement - and they are looking for funding and other forms of support to enable that potential to be realised. We are planning a couple of events over the course of the next three or four months to promote SAEMP to a wider audience. |

Quote: | It gives me a great pleasure to announce that the Somali Voice newspaper is finally present on the Internet.
The objective of this much-needed website (Somali Voice Newspaper) is to have a voice that represents Somali communities in the UK, and to serve as a bridge between governmental, non-governmental agencies and Somali communities across the country. Historically, though the Somali Voice is young in age, it was first published in 2003 by a group of volunteers who understood the importance and the need for a bilingual community based newspaper providing local news of interest to our communities; and the necessity for media representation inspired by the current information-vacuum among Somali communities.
The reception and popularity of Somali Voice newspaper among Somali communities has beenoverwhelming and the response from the local newspapers has been equally encouraging.
Furthermore, different organizations in Bristol and Leicester have also contributed and actively participated in launching this community-based newspaper. Although we are limited in resources, the ideal goal is to broaden the reader coverage and achieve higher circulation among Somali communities across UK.
The aim of the Somali Voice is to make it easy accessible by launching this website to enable our readers especially late teens and young people to keep in touch with the latest news and views and the hot topics of the day.
The Somali Voice website will truly provide and represent views and news concerning and effecting Somali community in United Kingdom.
In conclusion, on behalf of Somali Voice team, I would like to thank the organizations and the individualswhose enthusiasm and commitment to the paper and the website have truly contributed a great deal which would be too many to mention and could justly praise in this short paragraphs.
We would specially like to thank Neighborhood Renewal, Avon and Somerset Constabulary and Quartet Community Foundation for funding this community based newspaper, also we would like to thank Brave Enterprise Agency, CDA and the journalist and editors of the Leicester Mercury and Evening Post for extending welcoming hand to our paper and their support and encouragement |

This report provides evidence for use in Somali minority clan asylum appeals following the emergence of the Islamic Courts, reinforcing the presumption of risk to minority clan members expressed in the AIT’s country guidance.
