*MA in Migration Studies
Studentship for 2006-07 academic session*

The Sussex Centre for Migration Research, in collaboration with Brighton and Hove City Council and with support from the Sir Halley Stewart Trust, is seeking applications for a bursary for its MA in Migration Studies starting in October 2006.

The bursary will be worth £3,600, and will be offered to a student on the MA in Migration Studies interested in working with a group of 80 resettled Oromo refugees in Brighton and Hove. The student will be expected to work closely with the City Council and relevant local NGOs to follow the 12 month programme of support offered to the refugees. The refugees are being resettled to Brighton and Hove under UNHCR’s ‘Gateway Protection Programme’, and are one of the largest groups to be resettled to the UK so far.

During the year, the student will be registered full-time on the MA programme, and will be expected to work for one day each week in a voluntary capacity within the City Council’s Gateway resettlement office. At the end of the year, s/he will contribute to a final report on the Gateway programme in Brighton and Hove, that will be circulated widely amongst relevant policy audiences, including other local authorities that are considering participating in the Gateway programme.
The student will also have the option of using the material gathered for their MA dissertation.

The Sussex Centre for Migration Research has an international reputation for research and teaching in this field, bringing together faculty from the disciplines of Geography, Anthropology, Law and Political Science.
The MA in Migration Studies is now in its 10^th year. Each year it attracts a wide range of students from diverse international backgrounds to pursue a programme of study that begins with a comprehensive review of theories and policies relevant to migration and takes students to the forefront of current international research.

Applicants are required to have a good undergraduate degree in a relevant social science discipline. An interest in forced migration generally, and resettlement programmes in particular, is also a necessity. Preference will be given to applicants familiar with the situation of the Oromo, and/or an ability to speak Oromo.

Please send full CV to Christina Oelgemoller at the address below. The deadline for receipt of applications is August 31^st . Interviews will be held in mid September.
