(14 hours per week, 18 month’s contract)
Grade 6
Salary £27,054 pro rata
Based Brixton
The Refugee Council is a national charity employing c.300 staff and using the services of over 300 volunteers. Offices are based in London, Birmingham, Leeds and Ipswich. The key objective of the organisation is to offer practical help and advice to refugees and asylum seekers in the UK and to influence policy makers and the public opinion in a way that benefits the client group.
The Parliamentary Officer is a key member of the campaigns and Public Affairs Team which is part of the Communications Directorate, their key aims are to increase public awareness of asylum issues and the Refugee Council, and to develop and run the Refugee Council’s campaigns and media responses.
The post holder must have worked in a professional capacity within the UK parliament, involving lobbying or policy dissemination and working with MPs. An excellent knowledge of political institutions is needed, especially the UK parliament, lobbying techniques and procedures. You must have the proven ability to communicate persuasively with MPs, Peers, ministers and other policy makers, along with the ability to write persuasive and highly literate documents and briefings. A willingness to work flexible hours and to travel across the region and to other parts of the country will be necessary. Your commitment to the work of The Refugee Council is vital along with an understanding of the importance of confidentiality and the principles of Equal Opportunities.
