The European Council on Refugees & Exiles (ECRE) is a pan-European network of 80 non-governmental organisations, concerned with the needs of people seeking refuge and protection in Europe. ECRE promotes the protection and integration of refugees based on the values of human dignity, human rights and an ethnic of solidarity. ECRE aims to ensure that its ideas, projects, research and policies are of the highest quality, legally accurate and representative of a wide range of knowledge, experience and best practice throughout Europe.

ECRE is offering two advocacy internships at its EU Office, starting March 2006.

The EU interns are active members of the Policy and Advocacy Department of the Secretariat. The ECRE Secretariat consists of an office in Brussels with a staff of four and two interns and an office in London with a staff of 16 plus five interns.

The post holders will work closely with the EU Representative in following EU developments in the asylum area, producing a weekly newsletter and other written reports, and participating in meetings with staff of European institutions and NGOs. A job description is available from or from the address below.

The post holders will be expected to be able to work independently, using their initiative and able to manage their own workload. They will need to do their own administrative work and assist the EU Representative with general office tasks if necessary.

The posts are offered for a period of 6 months, full-time and are unpaid. A small compensation to cover daily travel expenses within the Brussels public transportation area and lunch is offered. The successful candidates will be responsible for providing their own accommodation and other living expenses.

EU Office interns should have good knowledge of the EU institutions and hold a degree from an institute of higher education in a relevant area (law, political or social sciences, human rights, development studies, media/communications etc). Applicants should have proven knowledge of and interest in international and European asylum, refugee and human rights issues.

The post holders will be expected to be fluent in oral and written English. Typing ability and knowledge of Microsoft Office packages are essential. A working knowledge of another European language is useful.

Please send a curriculum vitae, a sample piece of written work and a covering letter stating:
- What you hope to achieve through the completion of an ECRE internship
- Any relevant experience or skills you have
- Where you saw the internship advertised

Please send this information by Friday 9 March 2007 to Miriam Rau at

Applications can also be sent by post to ECRE EU Office, 205 rue Belliard, Box 14, 1040 Brussels, Belgium.

Regrettably, due to the large number of applications we usually receive, it is not possible to write to you should you not be short-listed. If you have not heard from us within 28 days of the closing date, please assume that your application has not been successful on this occasion.

ECRE is committed to equal opportunity in the workplace and encourages applications from refugees.
