The London Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is seeking to fill the following vacancy:
Protection Assistant (GL6)
The position is an opportunity to contribute to UNHCR’s legal protection function in the United Kingdom. The Protection Assistant will work within the UNHCR Quality Initiative Project, assisting in the implementation of UNHCR’s oversight and training functions within the Home Office.
Salary: approximately £31,320 gross depending on experience.
Job Description
The successful candidate will be expected to:
• Assess the quality of decisions and substantive asylum interviews, focus on methodology and provide feedback.
• Provide training on principles of refugee law.
• Prepare and, where appropriate, present briefings for various external actors including Civil Society, Parliament, and media.
• Contribute to capacity building activities through the provision of substantive comment and advice on proposed revisions to asylum procedures, training programmes and RSD Guidelines, and where appropriate, deliver training.
• Draft reports on the progress of the Project.
• Remain abreast of developments in international refugee law and subsidiary forms of protection, as well as domestic developments in asylum policy, including UK jurisprudence.
• Assume any other legal/protection responsibilities that may be assigned by the Deputy Representative and or Legal Officer.
