Refugee and Humanitarian Affairs training

The Centre for Refugee Studies, Moi University invites applications from
qualified individuals to participate in a two weeks training on Refugee and
Humanitarian Affairs, scheduled for 24th September to 6th October 2006 in
Eldoret, Kenya.


Senior undergraduate and graduate students who wish to carry out research on
forced displacement and humanitarian intervention in the African region,
field-based women and men working in government, the humanitarian sector and
aid agencies are eligible. Individuals with demonstrated interest in working
with relief organizations will also be considered.

Course Objectives

The course aims at equipping participants with an analytical framework for
understanding legal, social, economic and
political issues relating to the
situation of refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the Great
Lakes region, the Horn and the East African region. In doing so, participants
will have the opportunity to critically examine the 1951 Convention, the 1967
Protocol, the 1969 Organization for African Union Refugee Convention,
International and Municipal Law, economics, politics and recent progressive
developments in international human rights law and jurisprudence, including the
Guiding Principles on internal displacement. Furthermore, participants will
have the rare opportunity to share insights on the need for a human rights
approach when seeking to maximize protection for refugees and internally
displaced persons.


Lectures, group discussions, and consultations will be the major modes of
instruction, and participants will be invited to write a short supervised
research paper at the end of the cours
e. Successful candidates will be awarded
a certificate of the Centre for Refugee Studies, Moi University, and Eldoret.


The Course will take place from 24th September to 6TH October 2006 in

The Course fee is $800 for East Africans and $1200 for non East Africans. The
fees will cover tuition, reading materials, lunch, tea and an excursion.
