The Medical Foundation proposes, from time to time, to publish work by clinicians and related professionals whose work speaks to subjects of concern to the MF which might not otherwise be aired.

Marian Tankink of the Department of Public Health and Primary Care works in the Section Medical Anthropology at Leiden University Medical Center has allowed us to publish a very interesting paper she presented in Amsterdam last November. This is the abstract of her paper:

Quote:
"The main coping strategy of the refugee women is to keep their experiences of sexual violence secret. This is not really news, because we all know that women tend to keep their intimate experiences secret. What I hope to make clear, however, is that their silence is not only because of the cultural taboo of sexual violence and the shame it produces. Their silence is also the result of a complex and dynamic reality in the daily life of the women in which they often experience confusing or contradictory cultural norms and expectations between their culture of origin and culture of refuge."

The full paper can be found on our web site at:

The paper may be of interest to those dealing with late disclosure of rape and torture.

"The Medical Foundation is a human rights organisation that exists to enable survivors of torture and organised violence to engage in a healing process to assert their own human dignity and worth. Our concern for the health and well-being of torture survivors and their families is directed towards providing medical and social care, practical assistance, and psychological and physical therapy. It is also our mission to raise public awareness about torture and its consequences."
