Non Press Advert
Health & Well-Being Worker (One Day Induction Process)
Temporary until 31st March 2007
Grade 5
Salary £24,690 pro rata
Based Brixton
Our Support and Advice Section offers a wide range of services to over 30,000 refuges and asylum seekers living in London each year. We provide a warm welcome to asylum seekers who have just arrived in the UK and support them though each stage of the asylum decision-making process. We help people who go on to gain refugee status, ensuring they receive the services to which they are entitled and can begin to build new lives in a different culture.
The Specialist team now offers a health and well-being access service to all clients passing through the One Day Induction Process. This is a one-day induction programme for newly arrived asylum seekers who are staying with friends or family in London, but who require financial support. We listen to people’s concerns and questions, introduce the Refugee Council’s services and explain the other agencies that are available to help clients who may be feeling overwhelmed and disorientated.
The post-holder will undertake initial assessments of clients’ health needs, including physical and mental health and mental well-being needs, provide briefings on entitlements to health care, assist clients to access specialist health services, including emergency services, promote healthy living and make referrals to internal colleagues as appropriate.
You must have a minimum 2 years experience of assessing the needs of individuals with health/social care problems, including mental health/mental well-being needs and risk assessment with regard to self-harm/suicide, making appropriate referrals and supportive casework with vulnerable clients. A working knowledge of relevant legislation and statutory entitlements is needed along with an understanding of the structure of the UK health services. You must have the ability and psychological resilience to work with people in crisis and acute states of distress or disturbance.
The ability to work in a pressurised environment, take effective decisions and meet deadlines is essential, along with being able to speak fluently in one or more of the following languages: Arabic, French, Farsi, Turkish, Tamil, Somali, Albanian, Spanish, Kurdish, Russian, Portuguese, Lingala, Tigrinya or Amharic. Your commitment to the work of The Refugee Council is vital along with an understanding of the importance of confidentiality and the principles of Equal Opportunities.
Closing date for completed applications: Friday 23rd June 06 @ 12 midday
Interviews will be taking place on Thursday 6th July
An application pack can be printed from the global drive – recruitment folder – current vacancies
