Many refugees arrive in this country having fled state terror, torture or rape, only to be met with fear, prejudice and open hostility. They can feel isolated and lonely – unable to rebuild their lives or develop links with the community. This is where we come in. Across the country, we promote the integration and independence of resettled refugees and help them access vital services. The sheer size of this challenge means we’re always looking to strengthen the team.

induction centre deputy team manager
£26,928 pa (pro rata, 14 hours per week temp contract until 28 Feb 2007)
Leeds
A vital source of leadership within the Centre, you’ll develop our services and line manage the team. Your aim will be to ensure the Centre briefs newly arrived clients, provides support and helps them access the National Asylum Support Service. To succeed you’ll need two years’ experience of providing direct services to vulnerable clients and a background in both leading and developing staff. Operational management experience is equally important, as is the ability to plan and continuously refine services. And given the nature of the role, you must also have an understanding of asylum determination procedures.

regional development advisor
£26,928 pa (pro rata, temp contract until 31 March 2007)
Leeds
Your aim will be clear – to promote the development of regional infrastructure to support refugee integration across Yorkshire and the Humber region. You’ll achieve this by working with a wide range of local and regional bodies and providing support for local and regional networks. You will advise and inform voluntary and community organisations working with refugees, supporting their development and helping them to engage local and regional government. A background of working with refugees is crucial, as well as an understanding of the role of voluntary organisations, particularly those led by refugees themselves.

project worker
£21,588 pa (pro rata, temp contract until 31 Jan 2007)
Leeds
Joining a dedicated team at our Leeds One Stop Service, you’ll provide direct advice and ongoing support to newly arrived asylum seekers and refugees. This will involve collaborating with partner agencies and community organisations, so strong communication and negotiation skills are vital. Two years’ experience of advice work is essential too, along with a sound knowledge of the National Asylum Support System, social security, homelessness and an understanding of how these affect refugees.

resettlement programme volunteer co-ordinator
£21,588 pa (pro rata, 17.5 hours per week temp contract until 15 April 2007)
Hull
Our volunteers give up their time to befriend our clients and help them both access local facilities and learn about life in the UK. In this key role, you won’t only recruit these volunteers - you’ll also deliver their training and ensure they’re supported from day one. A year’s experience of working with and recruiting volunteers is important, ideally within a service for vulnerable clients. You must also be comfortable planning and delivering training and travelling across the region. An awareness of some of the issues facing refugees and asylum seekers is essential too.
